Informatica Power Center Designer / Work flow Monitor / Workflow Manager. Mostly you will be using these three tools if you are preparing for ETL developer or designer role.

In the process of making it simple I am trying to take it from scratch. Yes, we do coding in designer. Since designer is a tool, it has provided few easy to use features to make coding simple. This is in fact the most basic difference in tools and languages. In languages we don’t get luxury of in built coding features and we need to write everything from scratch.
Coming back to designer- a very phenomenal difference for the people who are from java , dot net , VB background. In most of the languages code flow happens from top to bottom but in case of Informatica Power Center code flow happens from left to right. Getting hang of this sometime is very challenging.
Here is small attempt to describe Informatica power center designer landscape.
Informatica Power Center Workflow Manager
For web (JAVA, Dot net, PHP) and two tier application (VB, Delphi) developers a bit of orientation needs to be changed to understand power center workflow manager.
Analogy is the basic challenge here. Power center workflow manager can be easily understood if one understands the Data loading difficulties.
I feel that relating it with refinery will make us easy to understand power center workflow manager indeed designer as well.
Refinery is a system designed to take some inputs and produce output. Since it is a system it should work automatically without or limited manual interference. To maintain it can be designed by adding multiple sub refineries as well. So refinery system should be able to detect the input is available to process. To work this refinery system properly all sub refinery system should be able to coordinate and share the data across.
In Informatica power center workflow manager also we attach ETL sub components to work in coordination.
We create tasks here. Each task can be connected to each other and connection can be conditional as well. It has conditional abort mechanism as well.

Informatica Power Center Workflow Monitor
Work flow monitor is like dashboard where you can see the status of workflows. Moreover workflow monitor provides few more features like workflow re start , workflow resume etc . informatica failover feature can also be utilized here.
In workflow monitor we can see the log flies also for workflow runs. It even tells the start time end time and total time taken for a workflow to complete.
Workflow monitor has session stats as well , like number of records processed , name of the target loaded and throughput of data processing.
Tools – options – task views – Select remove attributes
Filters – auto filters – put filters on task view results
Output window – server shows the workflow run notifications
Notifications Window – Repository Service notifications
Task view / Gantt chart view –
